The donor bacterial cell makes contact with the other cell by creating a sex pilus, and by this way the plasmid copy is transferred to the other bacteria and integrates into the chromosome. The pilus is withdrawn. The newly copied plasmid reverses out of the chromosome but the DNA it carried from the cell donor chromosome, integrate with the receiver chromosome. Transfer of plasmids. The sex pilus is formed by the donor bacteria to connect with the receiver bacteria.

The copy of the plasmid is transferred through to the receiver bacteria via pilus. Inside the cell the plasmid reforms, establishing in the new host bacteria. But viruses don't have a cellular structure or their own metabolism; they need a host cell to reproduce. Viruses inject their own DNA into the host; sometimes those new genes are useful to the host and become part of its genome.

It should be noted that bacterial species such as rickettsia and chlamydia are considered living organisms despite the same limitation of not being able to reproduce without a host cell.
